Open Access refers to unrestricted online access to articles published in scholarly journals, and also increasingly to book chapters or monographs. The Library provides guidance to what resources are available and how they can be accessed.
Irish Repositories
Research@THEA
Research@THEA is an open access repository that launched in 2017 as a service for capturing, storing, preserving and showcasing the research output of Institutes of Technology in Ireland. As the material is freely available online to anybody with access to the Internet, the potential readership of open access articles far exceeds that of articles where the full text is restricted to subscribers. This increased visibility can result in raising profiles and citations for researchers.
RIAN
RIAN provides a single point of access to Irish research publications and contains content harvested from institutional repositories. It allows enhanced searching and browsing of aggregated content through normalised metadata and permits analyses of the content of research publications and the identification of research trends.

Publishing through Open Access
In publicly funded institutions, even though research is largely produced with public money by researchers who share it freely, the results are hidden behind technical, legal, and financial barriers. These artificial barriers are maintained by legacy publishers through traditional subscription journal models, and restrict access to a small fraction of users, locking out most of the world’s population and preventing the use of new research techniques.
As a response to this situation, the development of OA publishing arose. Open Access is the free, immediate, online availability of research articles combined with the rights to use these articles fully in the digital environment. Source
In 2023 IADT joined the IReL (Irish Research eLibrary) Open Access consortium. Joining IReL has given us access to considerable additional resources, as well as providing an opportunity to publish via Open Access across a number of different key journals without having to pay the article processing charges (APCs). For further information you can see our research page on Orchard here.
To find out more about how to publish your work through Open Access, please see our Library guide on the topic.
